The Icarus Mission

The Icarus Mission is designed as the "hands-on" exercise for students in the ham radio course.  The exercise entails planning and launching a High Altitude Balloon into the stratosphere while collecting position and weather data from the payload, code name: Lepus (Latin for "rabbit").  The Lepus module transmits data over the amateur APRS® network using the call sign and SSID: KA5AHS-11, which can be tracked by RF (radio frequency) on 144.390MHz or the aprs internet stream at the following link:!call=a%2FKA5AHS-11

Goals & Objectives

The goal of the Icarus Mission is to augment the learning process for students to obtain their amateur radio operator license. Amateur radio, by nature, incorporates many STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts that's desireable by school districts for today's learning.  The planning, execution, and completion of the Icarus Mission provides a relatively low-cost project for students to actively apply the information they learn in the classroom setting.

The Lepus Module

The Lepus Module is the code name given to the payload of the High Altitude Balloon that is launched as part of the Icarus Mission.  The module must meet strict size and weight guidelines, cope with extreme atmospheric conditions, and carry out the functions of the mission.
